WoW Forever glossary
The words players, guides and this site use, from SoD to soft reserve, each with the word Spanish players use. Game terms are the client’s own.
Forever and its world
- BlueprintGame term
An item that teaches a tier-2 or tier-3 camp feature.
- Call to ArmsGame term
The bonus week of one battleground: while it lasts, that battleground gives extra rewards. The battlegrounds take turns.
- CampfireGame term
Forever’s group camp: a cook lights the fire and each profession adds a feature, such as a station or a buff. A campfire has a limited number of feature slots.
- Classic Era
The permanent Classic realms: the original game at its final patch, with no new content. This site compares Forever with its client.
- Classic+
What players call a Classic game that keeps getting new content instead of replaying the old patches. Forever is Blizzard’s official take on it.
- ComprehensionGame term
A mage-only skill in Forever. You raise it by deciphering scrolls, and higher scroll tiers need more skill.
- Crafted Tier 1
Forever’s Tier 1 sets come per specialization, and four pieces of each set are made by crafting professions. You can wear only one crafted piece at a time.
- Craftsman's WritGame term
A crafting order: make the items it names and hand it in for a reward. Forever adds new ones.
- HardcoreGame term
A ruleset where death is permanent: a character who dies there can only be resurrected by moving to another ruleset. Forever’s Hardcore ruleset opens after launch.
- Layer
One of the copies a ruleset’s world is split into so it never gets crowded; players also call them shards. Joining a group moves you to the group’s layer.
- Legacy
Forever’s account-wide progression: each challenge you complete gives 1 Legacy point, and your total earns rewards.
- Merchant's FavorGame term
A Forever currency you get for Waylaid Crates. Durotar Supply and Logistics and the Azeroth Commerce Authority trade for it.
- Preferred Online LanguageGame term
An account setting that puts you with players who chose the same language. It decides who you meet, not your client’s language, and has a 24-hour cooldown.
- Rank Points
Forever’s PvP ranking currency, from tasks given in Gadgetzan and from battlegrounds: they add up over the season, never decay, and a weekly cap sets the pace.
- RulesetGame term
What Forever has instead of realms: Normal, PvP, Roleplay and later Hardcore. Each one is a single big world per region, split into layers.
- Scarce
A rare gathering result marked “Scarce”, used by new high-end recipes.
- Sealed
A dungeon or raid whose maps and bosses are encrypted in the beta files. Until it opens, we know it from its achievements and Blizzard’s level ranges.
- Secondary nameGame term
Forever characters have a first name and a secondary name (a surname). Only the pair must be unique in your region, so first names can repeat. You can hide it.
- Self-foundGame term
Classic Hardcore’s solo-economy mode: no trading, mail or auction house, only what you find or make yourself. Blizzard has not said if Forever will have it.
- SkyborneGame term
Forever’s new playable race: elves of Zephras Isle bound to the wind spirits, in two variants, High Order Skyborne (Alliance) and Windshaper Skyborne (Horde).
- SoDSeason of Discovery
A Classic season with runes, new raids and reworked classes. Forever brings back some of its talents and spells, marked “SoD” on this site.
- Waylaid CrateGame term
Profession supply crates new in Forever, such as “Waylaid Crate: Apprentice Herbs”, that you exchange for Merchant’s Favor.
- WoW ForeverWorld of Warcraft: Forever
Blizzard’s Classic+ version of World of Warcraft: the original game up to level 60, with new races, zones, dungeons, professions and systems.
Player slang
- Add
An extra monster that joins a fight already under way, often a patrol or the result of a bad pull.
- AggroGame term

- AHAuction HouseGame term
Where players sell items to each other for gold, through the auctioneers in the main cities.
- AoEArea of effect
An effect that hits everything in an area. In an “AoE pull”, the group gathers many monsters and kills them together.
- BiSBest in slot
The best item for one equipment slot for your class and spec. Forever’s new and changed items rewrite many Classic BiS lists.
- Buff
A helpful effect on a character, such as Power Word: Fortitude or a food bonus. Many classes bring a buff the whole group wants.
- CCCrowd controlGame term
Taking a monster out of the fight for a while without killing it, with spells such as Polymorph, Sap or Shackle Undead.
- Corpse run
Running back to your body as a ghost after you release your spirit, to revive without the Spirit Healer’s penalty.
- Debuff
A harmful effect on a character or monster: a curse, poison, disease, slow or armor reduction.
- DoT / HoTDamage over time / heal over time
Effects that deal damage (DoT) or heal (HoT) in ticks over several seconds instead of all at once.
- DPSDamage per secondGame term
How fast you deal damage, and also the damage-dealer role (the game calls it Damage). Forever has a built-in damage meter.
- FPFlight path
A flight route between two flight masters. You must discover a flight point before you can fly to it.
- Gank
Killing another player who has no fair chance, like a much lower level or someone already busy with monsters. Common on the PvP ruleset.
- GCDGlobal cooldown
The short lock, usually 1.5 seconds, after most spells and abilities before you can use another one.
- HealerGame term
The role that keeps the group alive with heals and by removing poisons, curses and diseases.
- HSHearthstoneGame term
The item that teleports you to the inn you set as your home with an innkeeper. It has a long cooldown.
- LFGLooking for groupGame term
Looking for a group, and the chat channel where players post it (LFM: looking for more). Forever also has a Group Finder.
- LockoutInstance lockGame term
Being saved to a raid: until the raid resets you return to the same copy, with the bosses you killed still dead.
- MatsMaterials
The reagents a recipe needs. “Your mats” means you bring them and the crafter only does the work, often for a tip.
- Mob
Any monster or creature you can fight. The word comes from the old text games (“mobile”).
- Need / GreedGame term
The loot roll buttons: Need if you will use the item, Greed if you want it to sell or disenchant. Need beats Greed.
- Ninja
Taking loot that was not yours to take, such as rolling Need on an item you cannot use or opening a chest before the group agrees.
- OOMOut of manaGame term
Out of mana. When the healer is OOM, the group stops and waits for them to drink before the next pull.
- Proc
An effect that triggers by chance, such as a weapon’s “Chance on hit” line or a talent that sometimes makes your next spell free.
- Pull
Drawing one group of monsters to the party on purpose, usually by the tank. A bad pull brings more than the group can handle.
- Reset
The weekly moment when raid lockouts end and weekly limits start over: Tuesday 15:00 UTC in the Americas and Oceania (early Wednesday in Australia), Wednesday 04:00 UTC in Europe.
- RezResurrection
Bringing a dead player back to life with a spell or a Soulstone. The Spirit Healer also revives you, but leaves you weakened for a while.
- RPRoleplayGame term
Playing your character as a role, in character. The Roleplay ruleset has strict naming and behavior rules for it.
- Soft reserve
A raid loot rule: before the raid, each player reserves one or two items, and only those who reserved an item roll for it.
- Tag
Hitting a monster first so it counts for you: only the first player or group to tag it gets the loot, the XP and the quest credit.
- TankGame term
The role that holds the monsters’ attention and takes their hits, so the rest of the group can fight safely.
- Trash
The ordinary monsters between the bosses of a dungeon or raid. They give little loot but stand in the way.
- Twink
A low-level character with far better gear, enchants and consumables than usual, often kept at the top level of a battleground bracket.
- Wipe
When the whole group dies in a fight. The group runs back and tries again, often with a new plan.
- World buff
A strong buff you get in the open world, such as the one a capital gives when a raid boss’s head is turned in. Classic raiders collect them before raiding.
Game basics
- Attunement
What a character must earn before it can enter an instance, usually a quest chain or an item: in Classic, Onyxia’s Lair asked for the Drakefire Amulet.
- BattlegroundGame term
An instanced PvP match with a goal, like capturing flags or holding bases. Forever adds Darkspear Islands.
- BoEBinds when equippedGame term
The item binds only when you equip it, so until then you can trade it or sell it at the auction house.
- BoPBinds when picked upGame term
The item becomes soulbound as soon as you loot it: it is yours alone and cannot be traded or sold to other players.
- Class TrainerGame term
The NPC who teaches your class’s spells and abilities as you level, and resets your talents for gold.
- Coefficient
The share of your spell power (or attack power) a spell adds to each hit or heal. A coefficient of 0.8 turns 100 spell power into 80 more damage.
- DungeonGame term
An instance for a group of five, with its own copy of the monsters and bosses. Forever adds new dungeons and changes old ones.
- Dungeon key
An item that opens a locked door or part of a dungeon, such as the Skeleton Key of Scholomance or the Shadowforge Key of Blackrock Depths. Rogues can pick some of these locks.
- EliteGame term
A tougher monster, with a gold dragon around its portrait, meant for a group rather than one player.
- ExaltedGame term
The highest reputation standing you can reach with a faction.
- Flight MasterGame term
The NPC who flies you, for a fee, to the flight points you have already discovered.
- GuildGame term
A lasting club of players with its own chat and ranks. Most raids are organized by guilds.
- Hit cap
The hit chance past which more hit adds nothing, because your attacks no longer miss. It depends on the target, and a raid boss needs the most: the character sheet’s hit tooltip gives the figures, and best in slot and the character planner use them.
- HonorGame term
Points for killing enemy players, spent on PvP items (you can hold up to 15,000). In Forever your PvP rank comes from a separate currency, Rank Points.
- InnkeeperGame term
The NPC who sets your Hearthstone’s home. Resting in their inn builds up rested XP faster.
- InstanceGame term
A private copy of a dungeon, raid or battleground for your group alone, so no other group shares your monsters.
- NPCNon-player characterGame term
Any character the game controls, from quest givers and vendors to monsters.
- PvEPlayer versus environmentGame term
Fighting the game’s monsters rather than other players: quests, dungeons and raids.
- PvPPlayer vs. PlayerGame term
Fighting other players: duels, battlegrounds and world PvP. Also the ruleset where you can be attacked almost anywhere.
- RaidGame term
A group of up to 40 players, and the instances built for 10, 20 or 40 of them. Raid bosses drop the best gear.
- Random bonusRandom additional statsGame term
Stats an item gets at random when it drops, named by a suffix (“of the Bear”: Strength and Stamina). Two copies of one item can carry different bonuses.
- Rare eliteGame term
A rare monster that is also elite: it spawns seldom, hits hard and drops better loot. Its portrait has a silver dragon.
- ReputationGame term
Your standing with a faction, from Hated to Exalted. A higher standing brings rewards, discounts and quests.
- RestedGame term
Bonus XP that builds up while you are offline, faster in an inn or a city. Kills give double XP until it runs out.
- SoulboundGame term
Bound to your character: the item cannot be traded, mailed or sold to other players.
- Wing
A separate part of a large dungeon, with its own entrance, bosses and level range: Scarlet Monastery has four wings, Dire Maul three.
- World drop
An item any monster of the right level can drop, anywhere, instead of one boss’s loot. Rare and impossible to farm on purpose.
- World event
A holiday or festival that changes the world for some days, with its own quests, vendors and rewards, such as the Lunar Festival or the Darkmoon Faire.
- XPExperience pointsGame term
What you earn from quests, kills and exploring to reach the next level. The Spanish client writes it “PE”.
Data and this site
- Added
On this site, a count that joins what is new in Forever and what comes from SoD, as in “5 talents added (4 from SoD)”.
- Beta
Forever’s test phase before launch, open to testers and to players whose edition includes beta access. This site is built from the beta files, so its numbers can still change.
- Build
One version of the game client, numbered like 1.60.1.69977. Each new beta build can change data, and this site is rebuilt from every one.
- CDNContent delivery network
The servers Blizzard uses to deliver game builds. We download each new build’s files from it, the same files the launcher installs.
- Changed
Exists in Classic Era but with different values in Forever: stats, levels, reagents or ranks. Our pages show the Classic value next to the new one.
- Client
The game program on your computer. Its files hold names, spells, items and maps; the servers keep the rest, such as loot tables and drop chances.
- Datamining
Reading the game client’s files to find data the game does not show yet. Most of this site comes from them and the hotfix caches; dates and plans come from Blizzard’s posts.
- DB2
The client’s database tables, such as Item, Spell or AreaTable. The game names and numbers on this site are read from them.
- Encrypted
Content that ships in the client locked with a key until Blizzard releases it, like the sealed raids. We can tell it exists, not what it holds.
- ES pending
The Spanish client still shows this name in English. It updates on this site when the translation ships.
- First seen
A record the servers sent for the first time, usually because a client looked the item up. It is listed apart from real changes.
- Hotfix
A change Blizzard applies from its servers without a new client build. We read them from the client’s hotfix cache, so values can change between builds.
- New in Forever
Not in the Classic Era client, by ID or by name. The site’s “New” badges and counts use this meaning.
- Placeholder
A temporary name, text or value in the beta files that Blizzard will replace. We leave placeholders out of lists and counts.
- Stat weight
How much one point of a stat is worth for a spec, compared with the others. Best in slot lists add up each item’s stats times these weights: estimates, not rules.
- Stats withheld
Items whose stats the beta files leave out until someone loots them. We show their effect when it can be read.
