Where does each pick come from?

How this list is made

The ranking is calculated, not hand-picked. Here is everything it uses, so you can check it.

Rules first

  • Only items your class can use, at or under the level you set.
  • Plate counts from level 40, when your class learns it (game files).
  • Two one-handers count from level 20, when your class learns to dual wield (game files).
  • Your faction’s items (or only items both factions get), no Unique item twice, and at most one item of a limited group (one crafted Tier 1 piece).
  • An item belongs to one faction when the game files say so, when its reputation, quest or vendor belongs to one side, or when it is a PvP or battleground reward named after one side’s rank or battleground faction, the way Blizzard names them (“High Warlord’s Blade”, “Stormpike Insignia”).
  • Items with no level requirement count from the level of the quest that gives them, else from item level − 5, the rule most items follow; these carry a mark.
  • At level 55 and above, Classic items nothing in Forever’s files points to carry a “not confirmed” mark, and Classic raid items stay out unless you show them.

Then a score

  • Each item scores the sum of its stats times their value for the spec at your level, plus weapon damage, with the best random bonus (“of the Bear”) of items that have them.
  • The list shows the value of each alternative next to the pick. Items within 3 % are “just as good”: take the one that is easier to get.
  • Once the set goes over the hit capHit cap The hit chance past which more hit adds nothing, because your attacks no longer miss. It depends on the target, and a raid boss needs the most: the character sheet’s hit tooltip gives the figures, and best in slot and the character planner use them., extra hit counts for less and the list is ranked again. The caps are the game’s own, from the character sheet’s hit tooltip, and depend on the Target: against a raid boss 8 % with weapons and 17 % with spells, against a target of your level 5 % and 4 % (PvP always reads your level). The default Target is a raid boss at level 60 and a target of your level below it, the same numbers the character planner uses.

What we don’t know yet

  • Where items drop in Forever: loot tables are not in the client, so drops come from Classic data (cMaNGOS), which may differ.
  • How much Agility or Intellect gives 1 % crit in Forever: the client has no table for it, so we use Classic values.
  • Set bonuses and Use or proc effects are not in the score yet; the tooltips show them.
  • Items Blizzard still hides: each slot counts them.
